Machu Picchu Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city constructed on top of a mountain in Peru. It’s architecture is incredible, as even five hundred years ago, the Incans managed to construct a city that has withstood earthquakes and mudslides for the next five centuries without a problem. Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, and sits just off the coast of Australia’s Gold Coast. It spreads over an area of roughly 344,000 square kilometers, and is home to over 2,900 individual reef systems. Snorkeling and diving are great ways to see the reef up close. Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China is one of the most well known structures in the world, comprising of many smaller structures joined together over many years of construction. It was built by many different dynasties between 770BC and 1644AD, and has been repaired and maintained since. Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is a gorgeous and easily travelled area of Thailand that houses hundreds of Buddhist temples. Surrounded by jungle, and with an array of ancient buildings, this city is a breathtaking example of inspirational travel destinations. Egypt One of the ancient wonders of the world, the pyramids in Egypt are indeed a wonder to behold. Giant tombs of long-dead pharaohs spread out across the landscape, thousands of years old and monolithic in appearance, “inspirational” doesn’t begin to cover the scope of emotions most people feel in their presence. Amazon Rainforest The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most diverse ecological systems in the world, home to thousands of species of creatures, large and small. It is situated in Brazil, South America, and through it runs the Amazon River, the largest natural river in the world. Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is a 277-mile long natural rock formation in Arizona, USA. It reveals millions of years of geological history visually, and the colours and scope of size is astounding. Uluru Uluru (or Ayer’s Rock) is a 550 million year old, monolithic stone in the center of Australia. It appears to change colour with the time of day, and is sacred to the indigenous people of Australia. Tours are run out to it every day, as the nearest town is 450kms away from it, and some offer tours to climb it, however this is deemed offensive to the indigenous Australians, so keep that in mind when booking a trip. Stonehenge Stonehenge is one of the oldest man-made structures on earth, with an estimated construction date of 3000BC, making it roughly 5000 years old. Not much is known about it’s construction or the people who constructed it, but it is protected as a world heritage site. Forbidden City The Forbidden City in Beijing, China, is the largest collection of ancient wooden structures in the world. Entry was barred to the public for many centuries as it was an imperial palace for the emperors of china. It now houses a museum, and is worth a visit if you want to see hundreds of years of history in the flesh. These sites are inspirational because they represent the summit of discovery and the rise and fall of human civilization in many parts of the world, all are worth seeing, and all belong on any good bucket list.
