Designer spotlight: SlinkyLinks by Melodie Telliez

This label only works from scraps of leather that they get from a local shoemaker, making SlinkyLinks sustainable and eco-friendly. By saving those castoffs from the bin, they make sure that no leather is wasted. You’re probably wondering how Melodie got inspired to move into the jewellery industry, after working for a shoemaker for over a year, the designer was in charge of the cutting.

“When you cut shoes out of leather, you end up with bits and pieces that you can’t use to make shoes. And they usually go to waste as stocking those bits takes up space people just don’t have in a London workshop. After a few months it really started to get on my nerves, all this beautiful leather trashed, when for sure it could be used for something.” And indeed it can! How? By turning all those scraps into stunning, edgy, one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery!  You already know leather is very flexible and light, it comes in all sorts of colours, textures and patterns so the possibilities are endless. 

By introducing a lot of patent leather into her designs, she can create very sophisticated pieces. You get the richness of the leather without the roughness.
