Schizophrenic.NYC was created, founded and designed by a Schizophrenic New Yorker who wants to make a difference in the way the mentally ill homeless are treated in NYC as well as change the way New Yorkers feel about mental illness. The idea behind the designs is that when the unmedicated person with Schizophrenia looks at a basic regular Rorschach test they see it with a whole different perspective. By redesigning the test with new colours and patterns, now everyone looks at the test with a whole new perspective. Here we get to know a bit more about the brand and the impact it has on other people.

Tell us about your company and why you started it?
I started the clothing line Schizophrenic.NYC because having Schizophrenia I wanted to give back to the mental health community.  I want to help raise awareness for the mentally ill homeless in NYC as well as try to reduce the stigma of mental illness. Also, I want to start a discussion on how we treat people with mental illness especially in NYC.  Right now, we sell tanks, tees, prints, buttons and bracelets to help raise awareness.

What made you decide on this type of artwork?
I decided on using the Rorschach test because it is a classic image of psychology. The idea behind the designs is that when the unmedicated person with Schizophrenia looks at a basic regular Rorschach test they see it with a whole different perspective.  By redesigning the test with new colors and patterns, now everyone looks at the test with a whole new perspective.

How did you create these designs?
These designs started with detailed drawings that were scanned into the computer.  After doing some Photoshop magic, I made them into the shape of the Rorschach test and got them Sublimation printed onto tanks and tees.

What do you believe is the most common misconception of people who have schizophrenia?
The most common misconception about people who have Schizophrenia is that they are absolutely crazy.  A lot of people don’t know that there are very high functioning Schizophrenics and they live completely normal lives.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of stigma surrounding Schizophrenia, which is something Schizohrenic.NYC is trying to change.

What can we expect from Schizophrenic.NYC in the future?
Schizophrenic.NYC is growing everyday.  For example, we just printed the “DONT BE PARANOID, YOU LOOK GREAT” tanks and tees.  We’ve also just got new buttons as well.  We are receiving a very good response from NYC right now and hope to only grow more and more.
