Nowadays, perfume is defined as being a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents used to give the human body, animals, food, objects and living spaces “a pleasant scent.” Perfume is derived from the Latin word, “per fumus”, meaning through smoke. It was widely used in the evolution of Perfumery (the art of making perfume) which is linked to the Human History. Since antiquity; in Africa, and especially in Egypt; the art of associating odours to create complex smells is already known and fragrance is also gradually associated with feminine beauty through Queen Cleopatra who used it in ointments or in scented baths as a powerful tool of seduction. Fragrance making is the perfect symphony between the science of mixing “scented” molecules and the art of making people travel through the story that your perfume is telling.

Perfumery is the perfect union and balance between the uniqueness of self-expression through art, and the precision of science by mixing “scented molecules” to create a one of a kind Masterpiece. Daughter of a Flight Attendant father and a Fashion Designer mother, Laure Barry (Nose and Founder of Gold Essence Cosmetics) developed a passion for travel since her young age. She moved to France to study chemical engineering, a little bit by hazard at first, but then found herself liking it.

Not able to find what she was looking for, she started making her own natural products. Having suffered from asthma since childhood, she found out through research that some chemicals like phthalates could be a trigger; she then decided to make her own fragrance line. Inspiration through the meditation of one of her favorite scriptures (Revelation 21:19-21), Laure was inspired to name her Perfumes after the gemstones mentioned in these scriptures. Each perfume reminds her of a city, place, area she has visited and loved. Her passion for travel is reflected through the different stories accompanying the fragrances.

Their heart is towards helping orphans and other children from very low income families. To that effect, Gold Essence Cosmetics gives back 10% of its proceeds to World Changers – a non-profit organisation based in Washington D.C. which supports children all around the world, providing for their immediate needs such as food, water and medicine. They also help in the construction of schools as they believe in economic growth through youth education. For each product that you purchase, you are feeding a child somewhere in the world and contributing to their well-being, health, education; their future.
