Film review: Yves Saint Laurent Stephanie AndersonMarch 14, 20140 viewsFashionfashion filmHaute Couture0 Comments0 views The much awaited French biopic of Yves Saint Laurent is finally here, it is the first of two films coming out this year about the late fashion designer. The film displays the young talented couturier Yves Saint Laurent´s life and his career at the very beginning, from landing an assistant designer position at the age of 19 for Christian Dior, in Paris 1955, to meeting his companion and the love of his life Pierre Bergé, and together opening Yves Saint Laurent´s own Haute Couture house in 1962. Pierre Niney, who stars Yves Saint Laurent does a remarkable and realistic performance in portraying the troubled designer and artist. He managed to portray the designer with such an accuracy that Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint Laurent´s lifelong business partner and former romantic partner, said he was “blown away” by Niney´s performance. Pierre Bergé has also given the film his official blessing. The role of Pierre Bergé is played by Guillaume Gallienne. He contributes with an emotional performance as the man behind the great designer and brand Yves Saint Laurent, but also as the man who loved him and knew him the best. One of the lines in film said by Bergé to Yves Saint Laurent is: “You have the talent; I’ll take care of the rest” those specific words sums up the relationship between them and their love story displayed throughout the film. The film succeeds to capture the defining moments of the French designer´s life as well as portraying his journey from a shy, soft-spoken, enormously talented artist to the downward spiral into a celebrity lifestyle of parties, infidelity, drugs and alcoholism followed by nervous breakdowns. In all the film is a touching, elegant dramatisation of Yves Saint Laurent´s life but unfortunately it don’t succeed to give his creative talent the justice it deserves. The question remains if any film would ever be able to do that? Maybe this film is the closest we get to see and understand the ground breaking talent of Yves Saint Laurent.
