HUNJIYA Shares New Offering: ‘give it/what i get’ Jay HenleyJune 18, 201912 viewsMusic0 Comments12 views HUNJIYA (hun-jee-yuh) is singer and producer, Alice Kim, releasing her new single ‘Give It/What I Get’, following her debut EP ‘Lineage’. Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in a small town in upstate New York, Alice Kim combines memorable, yet confessional storytelling with her unique mixture of soul-infused guitar-pop and alternative R&B. The 21-year old artist creates a world full of colour in her music and aesthetic – inspired by her mother, a visual artist. Teaching herself the basics of production, HUNJIYA developed her skill at university, honing in on carving vast and spacious soundscapes, providing the perfect foundation for the defiant and ethereal sound of ‘Give It/What I Get’. Floating in between electronic synths and airy guitar and vocals, the track breaks down into a pitched down, downtempo alt-R&B refrain worthy of a place in Sampha’s catalogue, perfectly demonstrating Alice’s dynamic production. The track “is one of the more uplifting songs I wrote during a time where I felt like I was losing a sense of who I was,” explains Alice. “It was written to anyone who might be the type to give too much of themselves to others and don’t get enough in return.” It follows her stripped back, self-produced debut EP ‘Lineage’, which she made as a gift to her grandparents who had not yet heard her music. Combining both Korean and English lyrics, each song is written from the perspective of her grandparents and how they fell in love with one another. Having built up a community of fans online as a completely independent artist, HUNJIYA is a truly promising individual, capturing warmth and humanity inside her sleek and effortless production.
