By juxtaposing traditionally woven Thai textiles with industrial elements and everyday objects, she has created a collection of unique contemporary prints. This very personal interpretation includes references to metal workshops in Bangkok’s Chinatown, street food markets, Siamese Fighting Fish and Thai sport. To show its versatility,. Lisa King creates her prints in her London studio. Her unique style of print is instantly recognisable and is richly researched with strong influences from her Thai and Indonesian background. Lisa meticulously studies her chosen themes, developing prints through a medium of hand drawing, painting and collage whilst playing with ideas of dichotomy and deconstruction. The result is a exploration and manifestation of stories played out in print. The swimwear features four of Lisa’s ‘Signature’ prints. She uses print to sculpt the body; the placement of the Hibiscus floral interprets colour blocking to accentuate a woman’s curves, the Ombre Screwprint swimsuit has a graduated fade to flatter the figure. Cover ups are offered in sheer and opaque fabrics for varying options in coverage. The fabric is printed in the finest Italian lycra and the swimwear is made in India. Drawing influence from a multicultural background that begins in Thailand and ends in London, diverse ideas and illustrations are prevalent in Lisa’s work; deconstructed feminine floras began as travels through her mother’s native Indonesia, the masculine Screwprint was drawn from industrial machinery. The opulent Seraphim and the Soho Star juxtapose ideas of religion and sex. – a contrast which creates some striking images. Having grown up on Railei Beach, Thailand, Lisa has designed the collection using fabrics, prints and shapes that she feels would evoke the beach lifestyle of her native home. The floral prints and vibrant colours translate this inspiration and fuse with elements of graphic design to create a wearable pieces of art.
