In amongst the many weird and wonderful pieces strutting up and down the runways at this year’s New York Fashion Week was a collection that, unsurprisingly,  has caught the attention of fashionistas and geeks alike. Los Angeles based label Rodarte has produced a collection of Star Wars ball gowns featuring characters and places from the classic movies.
Californian sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy took their work to New York back in 2005 and presented their quirky yet romantic pieces to nearly everybody under the sun, working under their mother’s maiden name, Rodarte. Their collections still ooze originality to this day, and though each collection follows an obvious theme, there always seems to be some oddity within each piece that gives it an extra edge.

In terms of eccentric design, the Mulleavy sisters have truly outdone themselves this season. Star Wars fashion is certainly not a new phenomenon; high street shop Black Milk did a collection of fictional print leggings and dresses last year, but the high fashion ball gown aspect of the design is what makes Rodarte’s collection interesting. These are couture pieces not just for casual wear, they are intended for the brave, for those lovers of fashion who want to make a statement at some huge event.

The dresses themselves are stunning and for the most part very elegant. Though there are a few aspects of the pieces that are potentially unnecessary, such as a frill outlining the waistline for example, but the cool print against the classical necklines makes for some deliciously interesting fashion.
