On the year of Ghana’s 60th Independence celebration, Ricky returned to his place of birth in the hope to meet, create personal connections and photograph young men (a similar age to Ricky) to discover what job opportunities are available in the Asante Region of Kumasi. Using his artistic eye he has created a series of painterly and cinematic images highlighting the hard working craftsman of Kumasi. A typical photography project in Africa may consist of tribesmen and village communities however Ricky Darko wanted to explore something closer to home and therefore produced a series of images, which show job opportunities in the town where he was born. The men Ricky meet during his visit to Kumasi were aged between 25 – 37 years old and each had their own unique trade. Ricky spent a day with each of his subjects to ensure he understood their passion for their work to be able to capture and portray their story in the right way.
